NCAA Men’s Championships: Leon Marchand Leads 400 IM Prelims with 3:34

A morning after blitzing the NCAA record in the 200 individual medley, Leon Marchand comfortably secured the top seed in the 400 IM at the 2023 NCAA Championships.

Marchand went 3:34.47 to set a Jean K. Freeman Aquatics Center record. He’s the top seed by nearly a second and a half and within three seconds of his NCAA record from the Pac-12 Championships.

Sticking with him in the final heat of five was last year’s NCAA champion, Hugo Gonzalez of Cal. The Spanish international went 3:35.86.

Third is Carson Foster of Texas, who shut it down coming home to go 3:36.38. He’s one of three Longhorns in the final, with David Johnston fifth and Jake Foster into the A final in eighth. Hubert Kos went 3:36.86 to get in there in fourth for the Sun Devils.

Cal’s Jason Louser pulled away in breaststroke in the first circle-seeded heat to go 3:38.19. that got him the sixth seed. Jake Foster was second, and Baylor Nelson third, which landed him ninth by .05. Foster dominated the next-to-last heat, with Kos for company briefly in the front half.

In the last heat, Georgia’s Ian Grum gave chase of the leading Pac-12 pair, which was fast enough for him to drop 1.5 seconds and get into the A final in seventh.
