NCAA Men’s Championships: Destin Lasco Fires Off 43.93 100 Back

Cal’s Destin Lasco secured the top seed in the 100 backstroke at the 2023 NCAA Championships with a time of 43.93.

The Cal junior bossed the first of three circle-seeded heats in 43.93, taking down a pool record set by Coleman Stewart at NCAAs in 2018. He was about a tenth up on the reigning champion, Kacper Stokowski of NC State, safely in the second seed in 44.02.

Tied for third are the swimmers that finished second and third, respectively, last year: Indiana’s Brendan Burns and Adam Chaney of Florida. They were the co-winners of the sixth and final heat. For Burns, it wraps up a double with the 100 fly. Stokowski won the next-to-last heat.

Arizona State continued a fast morning with a pair of swimmers in the A final. Jack Dolan went 44.78 to qualify fifth, and Owen McDonald was 7th. Utah also got an A finalist via Nate Stoffle in sixth. His brother Aidan was 13th. Andrei Ungur of Utah rounded out the top eight.

Also making it back were Brady Samuels of Purdue, who blitzed the second heat of six from an outside lane in 45.17. He’s tied for 10th with Southern Illinois’ Ruard van Renen.
