National Junior Team to Train in Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado, October 22. THE future of American swimming will gather from October 28-30 at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs for the National Junior Team Training Camp. The swimmers invited to the three-day affair earned their bids through their performances at national-level competitions or through meeting automatic qualifying times. The girls are 15-and-under while the boys are 17-and-under.

Since the inception of the training program in 1989, at least one former National Junior Team member has qualified to represent the United States at the Olympic Games. The get-together is a chance for the team to train together before it races against athletes from Canada, Great Britain, Australia and New Zealand at the Victoria Championships in Melbourne from Jan. 3-7.

“The National Junior Team is the first step for many of our most successful National Team athletes,” said Everett Uchiyama, USA Swimming’s National Team Director. “This is an incredibly talented group, and the challenging experience of competing in Australia will help their preparation to contribute to our Olympic effort in Beijing and London.”

The athletes will learn about media training, race analysis, lactate clearance testing, nutrition and doping control, in addition to completing team-building activities. Two-time Olympic medalist and Junior Team alum Diana Munz (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Lake Erie) will speak about her Junior Team experience.

From Germantown Academy and under the direction of renowned coach Dick Shoulberg, Teresa Crippen is the third member of her family to make the Junior National Team. She was preceded by her sister Maddy, a 2000 Olympian, and her brother Fran, a national champion in the distance-freestyle events.
