Minnesota’s Chantal Nack, Bowen Becker Win Big Ten Swimmer of the Week Honors

The Big Ten Conference announced its swimmers and divers of the week as the Minnesota Golden Gophers won three of the six weekly awards. Bowen BeckerChantal Nack and Max McHugh were honored by the Big Ten on Wednesday for their efforts in the win over Northwestern and Purdue.

Iowa’s Jayah Mathews won the diver of the week award, while Indiana’s James Connor won the men’s diver of the week award. Penn State’s Madison Murtagh won the freshman of the week award.

Men’s Swimmer of the Week

Bowen Becker, Minnesota

Sr. – Las Vegas, Nev.

  • Won both the 50 Freestyle (19.83) and the 100 Freestyle (43.24) with NCAA “B” cut times
  • Contributed to two Gopher first place finishes in the 400 Freestyle (2:57.09) and 200 Medley (1:28.38) relays
  • Earns his fourth career Swimmer of the Week honor and the fourth of the season
  • Last Minnesota Swimmer of the Week: Bowen Becker (Jan. 23, 2019)

Women’s Swimmer of the Week

Sr. – Mankato, Minn. – Mankato West – Civil Engineering

  • Earned four first-place finishes last week against Northwestern and Purdue
  • Recorded NCAA ‘B’ cut times in the 200 freestyle (1:46.84) and 200 backstroke (1:56.55)
  • Finished first with her 400 freestyle relay (3:23.22) and 800 freestyle relay (7:21.68) teams
  • Additionally, earned first place in the 500 freestyle (4:48.60) and second place in the 200 individual medley (2:01.34)
  • Garners her first career Swimmer of the Week award
  • Last Minnesota Swimmer of the Week: Lindsey Kozelsky (Oct. 31, 2018)

Men’s Diver of the Week

James Connor, Indiana

Sr. – Melbourne, Australia

  • Won both the 1-meter (414.00) and 3-meter (446.78) diving events last weekend in Indiana’s dual meet against Louisville
  • Posted NCAA Diving Zone qualifying scores in both events
  • Earns the sixth Diver of the Week award of his career, the third of the season and the first since Nov. 21, 2018
  • Last Indiana Diver of the Week: Andrew Capobianco (Jan. 30, 2019)

Women’s Diver of the Week

Jayah Mathews, Iowa

So. – Sydney, Australia

  • Finished first in the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events against Western Illinois and Northern Iowa last week
  • Recorded an NCAA Zone Championship qualifying score in the 1-meter (324.70) and 3-meter (380.20)
  • Tallied a career-best score in the 3-meter event
  • Earns her fourth career Diver of the Week award and third of the season
  • Last Iowa Diver of the Week: Jayah Mathews (Dec. 12, 2018)

Men’s Freshman of the Week

  • Won both the 100 Breaststroke and the 200 Breaststroke events with NCAA “B” cut times of 53.57 and 1:54.72, respectively
  • Set a new pool record at Northwestern’s Norris Aquatics Center with his 200 Breaststroke time
  • Earns his seventh career Freshman of the Week award
  • Last Minnesota Freshman of the Week: Max McHugh (Jan. 23, 2019)

Women’s Freshman of the Week

Madison Murtagh, Penn State

Longwood, Fla. – Lake Brantley

  • Earned two first-place finishes against Villanova last week
  • Recorded first-place finishes in the 500 freestyle (4:55.64) and 1,000 freestyle (10:11.95)
  • Earns her third Freshman of the Week award
  • Last Penn State Freshman of the Week: Madison Murtagh (Jan. 16, 2019)
