Minnesota Hires Zach Wood as Assistant Coach

The University of Minnesota added alum Zach Wood to the coaching staff for the 2026-27 season.

Wood competed for the Golden Gophers from 2003-07, making multiple Big Ten Championships finals. He twice qualified for NCAAs, earning All-American honors in 2007, the year he served a co-captain. He competed at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials.

“I’m immensely grateful to return to my alma mater and add another chapter to my University of Minnesota journey as a coach,” Wood said in a press release. “This is an exciting chance for me to learn from an incredible coaching staff and make an impact on a group of amazing athletes that have chosen to be a part of our illustrious Gopher family legacy. I owe a debt of gratitude to Coach Kremer and the rest of the staff for being supportive and welcoming. Go Gophers!”

Wood returns to his alma mater after serving as the head coach last year at Augsburg University, the Augies finishing ninth at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships. He was an assistant coach at the University of St. Thomas in 2012-13. After graduating from college, he was the lead coach for Minnetonka Swim Club from 2008-13 and was the head coach for Black Dog Swimming Club in Burnsville, Minn., in 2013-14.

“We are fortunate to welcome Zach as the newest member of our coaching staff!” Director of Swimming and Diving Kelly Kremer said. “In addition to his love for Gopher Swimming and Diving, Zach brings new ideas, relentless energy, and a passion for swimming that is contagious!”

Wood is a native of Alma, Michigan. He was a member of three Michigan state title teams, winning eight individual state titles and earning eight All-American certificates. He was the Michigan High School Swimmer of the Year in 2003.
