Minnesota Golden Gophers Keep Josh Johnston, Thomas McCarthy In State for 2021
NEW COMMITS: The University of Minnesota has received a pair of in-state verbal commitments for their growing Class of 2025 from Minnetrista, Minn. native Josh Johnston and Thomas McCarthy of Edina, Minn.
Both swimmers will suit up for the Golden Gophers along with Chris Morris, Bar Soloveychik, Jackson Brown, Andrew Garner, and Nathan Griffin at the start of the 2021-22 season.

Regarding his commitment, he said:
“I’m absolutely THRILLED to announce my commitment to study and swim at the University of Minnesota! I want to say an enormous thank you to all my coaches (especially Scott and Ben!), my teammates, family, and friends for supporting me along the way! Finally, I want to thank Coach Kelly for offering me this incredible opportunity! Can’t wait to begin my career as a Gopher!! #SkiUMah 〽️??〽️”
Johnston, who does his club swimming with Minnesota Flyers, most recently earned bronze in both the 100 breast and 200 breast at Minnesota Seniors in March. Last summer, he raced to seventh place in the 200m breast at Minnesota LCM Seniors before going on to compete at Des Moines Futures.
His best times include:
- 50 breast – 26.73
- 100 breast – 56.94
- 200 breast – 2:03.51
- 200 IM – 1:55.92
Also competing for Mound Westonka High School, Johnston is a four-time Minnesota Class A State Championship finalist. He placed fifth in the 100 breast and sixth in the 200 IM as a junior while taking seventh and 12th, respectively, in those events during his sophomore season.

Regarding his commitment, he said:
“I am very excited to announce my verbal commitment to swim and study and the University of Minnesota! I want to thank my family, coaches, and my friends for helping me along the way. Go Gophers! #SkiUMah〽️”
McCarthy trains year-round with Edina Swim Club and recorded five top-20 finishes with the same number of best times at Minnesota Seniors in March. He had a strong showing last long course season where he took 16th in the 200m fly at Minnesota LCM Seniors and notched a personal best at NCSAs.
His best times include:
- 50 fly – 22.88
- 100 fly – 50.93
- 50 back – 24.83
- 100 back – 52.66
Currently a senior at Edina High School, McCarthy finished eighth in the 100 fly and 12th in the 100 back during his junior campaign at the Minnesota AA State Championships.
