Michigan vs. Colorado State, California
ANN ARBOR, Michigan, January 25. THE No. 10-ranked University of Michigan water polo team split the opening day of the Michigan Kick-Off, blanking Colorado State 12-0 after a come-from-behind upset bid came up short against No. 5-ranked California to the tune of an 8-6 loss on Saturday (Jan. 24) at Canham Natatorium.
Senior/junior goalkeeper Brittany May (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) made six stops in the opener and another two in eight minutes of action during the combined shutout of Colorado State. Freshmen Tara Brigham (Baytown, Texas/Sterling), McKenna Farrar (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) and Morgan Turner (Mission Viejo, Calif./Trabuco Hills) each tended the cage for one period to complete the third shutout in program history.
Senior Sharayah Hernandez (Pico Rivera, Calif./El Rancho) was the big point-getter on the day, netting two goals and two assists. Freshman Meagan Cobb (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) scored a hat trick against the Rams, while seniors Julie Hyrne (Sunnyvale, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) and Mary Chatigny (Palm Springs, Calif./Palm Springs) and sophomore Keller Felt (La Jolla, Calif./La Jolla) had three points each.
The Wolverines will play twice on Sunday (Jan. 25) on day two of the Michigan Kick-Off at Canham Natatorium. Michigan will take on No. 7 San Jose State at 10:10 a.m. and the defending national champions, No. 3 UCLA, at 2:30 p.m.
