Michigan Sweeps Big Ten Swimming, Diving Weekly Honors

The University of Michigan swept the first week of Big Ten Swimming weekly honors.

Big Ten Swimmer of the Week: Maggie MacNeil (London, Ontario, Canada) raced for the first time since she won three medals for Canada at the FINA World Championships. MacNeil won the 100-yard freestyle (49.54) and 100-yard backstroke (53.50), and also contributed legs on the winning 200-yard medley relay (1:40.80) and 400-yard freestyle relay (3:24.36) as the Wolverines defeated Miami (Ohio) and Navy on Sept. 20 in their first meet of the season.

Big Ten Diver of the Week: Allie Klein (Melbourne, Australia) began the season on a high note with a win on three-meter (331.65) and a second-place finish on one-meter (280.90). Both scores met the NCAA Zone Diving qualifying standard.

Big Ten Freshman of the Week: In her collegiate debut, Kaitlynn Sims (Montgomery, Texas) dominated the distance events, taking first in both the 500-yard freestyle (4:50.50) and 1,000-yard freestyle (9:53.49).

Big Ten Swimming men’s honors

Big Ten Swimmer of the Week: Miles Smachlo (Rexford, N.Y.) took the 100-yard butterfly (47.59) and 200-yard butterfly (1:46.59), and also contributed legs on the winning 200-yard medley relay (1:28.07) and 400-yard freestyle relay (2:58.60) in Michigan’s first meet of the season against Miami (Ohio) and Navy on Sept. 20.

Big Ten Diver of the Week: Ross Todd (Adelaide, Australia) swept both diving events, winning one-meter (369.75) and three-meter (401.15). Both scores met the NCAA Zone Diving qualifying standard.

Big Ten Freshman of the Week: In his collegiate debut, River Wright (Attleboro, Mass.) won the 200-yard IM (1:51.83) and finished second in the 100-yard butterfly (49.01) and 200-yard butterfly (1:50.30).
