Michigan Open
ROCHESTER, Michigan, February 13. FRESHMEN Michellangelo Marica and Josh Wolf each recorded victories to pace a banner day for the Oakland University men's and women's swimming team at the Michigan Open, Saturday. The Golden Grizzlies recorded eight top four finishes and set 21 career bests.
For the men, Wolf swam a career best 51.13 to win the championship final of the 100-yard butterfly. Marica lowered his career best by almost two seconds to win the "B" final of the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.14. Runner-up performances came from sophomore Kyle Gifford in the "B" final of the 100 freestyle (49.91) and Marica in the "B" final of the 100 fly (54.51, a career best).
Freshman Matt Systsma recorded a career best time of 51.49 to place third in the championship final of the 100 fly. In all, 12 OU swimmers notched career best times.
For the women, sophomore Jade Evink swam 2:05.40 in the 200 backstroke and freshman Jenny Larsen swam 1:06.33 in the 100 breast. Both times were career best as well as placing each of them third in the championship finals. Margo Stanfa swam a career best of 58.76 to finish fourth in the championship final of the 100 fly. A total of nine career best were recorded by the Golden Grizzlies.
The meet is scheduled to start at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow and will run all day.
