NEW COMMIT: The University of Michigan has picked up a new verbal commitment for their growing class of 2026 from Junior National qualifier Ozan Kalafat of Green Bay, Wis.

He will join Lucas Hodgson and Logan Zucker in Ann Arbor in the fall of 2022.

He told Swimming World:

“Beyond pumped to announce my verbal commitment to continue my swimming and academic career at the University of Michigan! Huge thanks to my family, friends, coaches, and teammates for all of their support! Can’t wait to be part of such a historic team! GO BLUE”️️”

A talented breaststroker and sprint freestyler, Kalafat does his club swimming with Mid Wisconsin Wave Makers and most recently earned five best times at the Speedo Premier Invite last weekend. Earlier this spring, he posted six top-15 finishes at NCSAs and had a strong showing at the ISCA International Cup.

Kalafat also won the 200 breast and 500 free at the Wisconsin 13&O Championships while collecting gold medals in the 100m/200m free at the 18&U Winter Championships.

His best times include:

  • 50 breast – 25.70
  • 100 breast – 55.59
  • 200 breast – 2:00.53
  • 100 free – 45.10
  • 200 free – 1:38.07
  • 500 free – 4:29.56
  • 200 IM – 1:51.24

A rising senior at Bay Port High School, Kalafat finished fifth in the 500 free and eighth in the 100 breast as a freshman at the Wisconsin DI State Championships.

Kalafat will add some much-needed breaststroke depth following the graduations of Will ChanAJ Bornstein, and Mason Hunter by the time he gets to campus. Under head coach Mike Bottom, the Wolverines finished fourth at the 2021 Big Ten Championships.
