Michigan DI State Finalist Tai Afrik Commits to Howard University

NEW COMMIT: Howard University has received another commitment for the 2021-22 season and beyond from Holland, Mich. native Tai Afrik.

He will join Darin Johnson of Atascocita, Texas, as a member of the Bison’s Class of 2025.

He told Swimming World:

“Going to Howard is an opportunity to get diverse perspectives, while receiving a magnificent education. As a swimmer I am excited about my incoming class and our potential to put Howard on the swim world map. Overall, I’m proud to call myself a Bison!”

Afrik does his club swimming with Michigan Lakeshore Aquatics. In July 2019, he finished ninth in the 100m free at the Michigan LCM Championships after racing at Cleveland Sectionals.

His best times include:

  • 100 free – 47.92
  • 200 free – 1:43.25
  • 50 fly – 23.98
  • 100 fly – 51.92

Also competing for West Ottawa High School where he served as team captain, Afrik placed eighth in the 200 free and 13th in the 100 fly as a senior at the Michigan DI State Championships. He also won the 100/200 free at the Red Conference Championships in 2021.

He has also earned All-Conference and All-State honors as well as receiving All-American accolades in the 4×50 free relay, in addition to being a two-time Most Improved Award recipient.

Thee Bison finished sixth overall in the team standings at the 2020 Coastal Collegiate Sports Association Championships.
