Michael Phelps Smokes World Best in 200 IM – Video Interview
Michael Phelps captured his third National title in as many nights in the men’s 200 IM, and once again, Phelps swam faster than the time that won the World title earlier this week. Phelps clocked 1:54.75 to win the event, faster than countryman Ryan Lochte swam to win the event in Kazan on Thursday. The time ranked as not only the fastest this year but also the fastest recorded since Phelps won his third straight Olympic gold medal in the event in 2012.
Phelps swam the race well under world record-pace for the first 100 meters and was even with that split after the breaststroke. After the race, Phelps answered whether or not he felt like he had gone out as fast as he did and how he felt as he faded slightly at the finish. Phelps also discussed the visualization processes he had used to mentally prepare for the swim, and he examined how his different strokes felt after branching out from butterfly for the first time all week. He also discussed whether he planned to go through with swimming the 200 breast on Monday.
