Melanie Margalis’ world championships debut is not over, as she’s set for the final of the 200 IM Monday in Russia. Margalis said the thought of competing in her first semifinal was nerve-wracking enough, but she’ll work on being calmer before the final.

“I got way nervous before walking out for (the semifinal),” she said. “I wasn’t expecting to get that nervous, but someone was talking about it being their first world championship final swim and I said, “Holy crap, mine too!’”

Swimming in the heat with Great Britain’s Siobhan-Marie O’Connor forced Margalis to work on not being too aggressive at the start of the breaststroke leg, which Margalis said she was able to do.

“I counted my first four strokes to make that they were nice and big and smooth, and then I went from there,” she said.
