Maria Lenk Trophy: Rebecca Soni Posts Top-Ranked Time
RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, May 5. THE Maria Lenk Trophy meet continued rolling with Rebecca Soni reasserting herself as the top breaststroker in the world. The meet is taking place in long course meters format.
Soni scorched the women's 100 breast with a top-ranked effort of 1:05.79. She clipped her previous world best of 1:05.89 set in February. Jessica Hardy placed a close second in 1:06.13 to move to second in the world rankings ahead of Leisel Jones' 1:06.18 clocked in April. Tatiane Sakemi grabbed a distant third in 1:12.62.
Kaio Almeida turned in a 52.11 for the victory in the men's 100 fly. That effort shot Almeida up to fifth in the world rankings behind Michael Phelps (51.75), Takuro Fujii (51.84), Joeri Verlinden (51.85) and Milorad Cavic (52.10). Glauber Silva finished second in 52.99 for a top 20 spot, while Gabriel Mangabeira took third in 53.13.
Felipe Silva won the men's 100 breast in 1:00.71, while Joao Luiz Gomes Jr. earned second in 1:01.10. Felipe Lima rounded out the top three in 1:01.15. Ous Mellouli hit the wall in 3:51.51 to win the men's 400 free. Juan Pereyra finished second in 3:53.51, while Lucas Kanieski rounded out the top three in 3:54.77.
Daynara De Paula captured the women's 100 fly title in 58.78 to move into the top 20. Gabriella Silva took second in 59.36, while Daiene Marcel Dias picked up third in 1:00.45. Poliana Okimoto topped the women's 400 free in 4:15.27, while Joanna Maranhao touched second in 4:15.84. Ana Marcela Cunha finished third in 4:16.21.
