Maren Taylor, Steele Johnson Lead After Respective Semifinals at USA Diving Winter Nationals

AUSTIN, Texas, December 20. UNIVERSITY of Texas senior and 2013 World Championships team member Maren Taylor (Arlington, Va./Austin, Texas) leads the women’s 3-meter contest and Steele Johnson (Carmel, Ind.) is first in men’s 10-meter after Thursday’s preliminary and semifinal competition at the USA Diving Winter National Championships at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. The finals on both events will take place Sunday.

Taylor, who was in second after the preliminaries, scored 619.20 points over two lists of dives in the 3-meter contest and leads by 42.7 points heading into Sunday’s final. Taylor’s University of Texas teammate Emma Ivory-Ganja (The Woodlands, Texas/Austin, Texas) is in third at 566,40, 10.1 points behind second-place Casey Matthews (Getzville, N.Y./West Lafayette, Ind.) of Purdue. Laura Ryan (Elk River, Minn./Athens, Ga.) is fourth at 565.70.

Johnson, a two-time national champion on 10-meter, totaled 956.45 points on his two list of dives to take a 124.6-point lead into the finals. He scored more than 80 points on four dives in the semis, including 91.80 points on his reverse 3 ? tuck in round five. Three of his dives in the prelims went for more than 80 points. David Dinsmore (New Albany, Ohio) is in second place with 831.85 points. Toby Stanley (Conway, Ark./Fishers, Ind.) scored 802.90 to head into the finals in third place, and Tanner Wilfong (Hershey, Pa./Coral Gables, Fla.) is in fourth at 786.65.

Scores will carry over into the finals, with the national champions on the two events determined by cumulative scores from three lists of dives. Results will also be used to select teams for several 2014 international competitions.

The USA Diving Winter National Championships continue through Sunday, December 22. Friday’s competition features preliminaries in all four synchronized diving events.
