Luka Mijatovic Blasts Latest NAG Record with Sizzling Mark in 1650 Freestyle
The record-breaking ways of Luka Mijatovic continued on Friday night as the 16-year-old star hacked a sizable chunk off his National Age Group (NAG) record in the 1650-yard freestyle for the 15-16 classification. Racing at the California/Nevada December Sectionals, Mijatovic posted a time of 14:30.01, which was more than seven seconds faster than his former standard, a 14:37.63 from earlier this year.
Mijatovic has been on a roll over the past several weeks. In addition to his record on Friday night, he recently established short-course NAG marks in the 15-16 age group in the 500 freestyle (4:08.57) and 1000 freestyle (8:37.01). In the long-course pool, he excelled at the U.S. Open, setting NAG standards in the 400 freestyle (3:45.30) and 800 freestyle (7:48.28).
A member of Team USA and qualifier for last summer’s World Championships in Singapore, Mijatovic has already committed to compete collegiately at the University of Texas. His new record performance in the 1650 freestyle would have been good for sixth place at last year’s NCAA Championships. More, it is just shy of the NAG record in the 17-18 classification, which is held by Luke Ellis at 14:29.48.
