LSU Tigers Add In-State Verbal from Futures Finalist James Calvin Huenefeld to Class of 2026

NEW COMMIT: Louisiana State University has picked up their second verbal commitment for the fall of 2022 from in-state standout James Calvin Huenefeld of Ruston, La.

He will arrive in Baton Rouge as a member of the Tigers’ Class of 2026 along with Josh Cobia.

He told Swimming World:

“I am super excited to announce my verbal commitment to the Louisiana State University! I am thankful to my family, friends, coaches, and everyone who has supported me along the way. Geaux Tigers!”

A talented sprint freestyler and backstroker, Huenefeld trains year-round with Bulldog Aquatic Club and is a Junior National qualifier. He most recently collected two gold medals at Louisiana Seniors in February and finaled in two events at College Station Sectionals in 2019.

In summer 2019, he was the 200m IM runner-up and grabbed bronze in the 400m free at the Louisiana 13&O LCM Championships before going on to finish eighth in the 50m free at Des Moines Futures.

  • 100 free – 45.93
  • 200 free – 1:41.16
  • 100 back – 51.35
  • 200 back – 1:50.18
  • 200 IM – 1:51.52

Huenefeld has made some pretty big improvements over the last two years, dropping two seconds in the 50 free, three in the 100 free, 10 in the 200 free, four in the 100 back, nine in the 200 back, and eight in the 200 IM. He is currently a junior at Ruston High School.

When he arrives on campus in the fall of 2022, Huenefeld will add his talents to a sprint group that will be led by 2020 SEC 100 free champion Brooks Curry who gave the Tigers their first SEC individual title since 2004.
