SUNDVALL, Sweden, July 5. SERVING as preparation for the World Championships, less than three weeks away, the Swedish Championships were held over the weekend. Generally, the times out of Sundvall were pedestrian, although a handful of quality performances were produced. Leading the way was Josefine Lillhage.
A finalist in the 200 freestyle at the Athens Olympics, Lillhage won her prime event in 1:59.60 and could be among the medal contenders in Montreal. On the women’s side, the 200 free appears to be one of the most wide open races at the World Champs. Lillhage also won the 100 free (56.25) and the 400 free (4:19.08) and finished third in the 50 free, behind Therese Alshammar (25.23) and Anna-Karin Kammerling (25.75).
Alshammar, one of the top sprinters in the world for several years, also edged Kammerling in the 50 butterfly, as her 26.40 was slightly quicker than the 26.44 of Kammerling. Alshammar was fourth in Athens in the 50 free while Kammerling was 10th in the 100 fly.
For the men, Martin Gustavsson earned a victory trifecta in the breaststroke events, winning the 200 distance in 2:14.81, more than six seconds clear of the closest competition. Gustavsson also touched the wall first in the 50 (28.57) and the 100 (1:02.63). In Athens, Gustavsson failed to advance beyond the preliminaries of the 100 and 200 events.
