Kristian Gkolomeev Leads 15 Swimmer Greek Olympic Roster

On Friday, the Hellenic Swimming Federation announced the 15 swimmers that Greece is sending to the Rio Olympic Games.

The men will have 10 competing and the women will have five.

Kristian Gkolomeev and Apostolos Christou lead the men with two events each. Gkolomeev is entered in the 50 and 100 freestyles. The Alabama swimmer anchored his team to a historic first NCAA relay title this March. At the London Games, the now 23 year old finished 31st in the 100 freestyle. Gkolomeev is currently ranked 13th in the world this year in the 50. Christou will swim the 100 and 200 backstrokes.

Stefanos Dimitriadis will be the oldest member of the Greek team as he swims the 200 butterfly.

Dimitris Dimitriou, Spyros Gianniotis, Christos Katrantzis, Dimitris Koulouris, Odysseus Meladinis, Panagiotis Samilidis and Andreas Vazaios complete the men’s roster.

Kelly Araouzou, Nora Drakou, Theodora Giareni, Anna Ntountounaki and Kristel Vourna will represent the women.

Gianniotis and Araouzou will both be competing in the open water 10K.

Gholomeev is Bulgarian – sad to see him compete for a different country than the one his father used to represent.
