Kentucky State Record Holder Thomas Mercer Chooses Virginia

NEW COMMIT: Olympic Trials qualifier Thomas Mercer of Louisville, Kentucky, has announced his verbal commitment to continue his academic and swimming career at the University of Virginia beginning in 2025.

He will join Maximus Williamson and Thomas Heilman in Charlottesville.

Regarding his commitment, he said:

“I am beyond excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my athletic and academic career at the University of Virginia. I want to thank my family, Coach Mike, and my teammates for making me the person and swimmer I am today. I would also like to thank Coach Todd and Coach Tyler for believing in me.”

Mercer trains year-round with Lakeside Swim Team and last competed at Indianapolis Sectionals where he recorded a trio of top-6 finishes. At Juniors East in December, he finished fourth in the 200 IM, fifth in the 400 IM and sixth in the 200 fly.

His best times include:

  • 200 IM – 1:43.74
  • 400 IM – 3:46.31
  • 100 back – 47.71
  • 200 back – 1:44.30
  • 100 breast – 55.42
  • 200 breast – 2:02.33
  • 100 fly – 47.70
  • 200 fly – 1:45.55
  • 100 free – 45.09

Currently a junior at St. Xavier High School, Mercer helped lead his team to its 36th straight KHSAA state title in 2024 after winning the 100 fly and 200 IM. His time of 1:43.74 broke the state record, and he defended his title in the 100 fly.
