NEW COMMIT: Olympic Trials qualifier Riley Francis of Southlake, Texas, has verbally committed to the University of Michigan and will arrive in Ann Arbor in the fall of 2022.

She will join Malia Amuan of North Andover, Mass. and Devon Kitchel of Zionsville, Ind. as a member of the Wolverines’ Class of 2026.

She told Swimming World:

“I am SO thrilled to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and swimming career at the University of Michigan! This opportunity would not have been possible without the endless support from my family, teammates, teachers, and all my coaches!! I can’t wait to be a part of such an amazing team, GO BLUE!!”

A talented sprint and mid-distance freestyler, Francis trains year-round with Lakeside Aquatic Club and owns the Olympic Trials cut in the 100m/200m free with several Junior National cuts. Last summer, she was the runner-up in the 100m free and earned bronze in the 200m free at Junior Nationals where she also finaled in the 50m free.

Her best times include:

  • 50 free – 23.23
  • 100 free – 49.51
  • 200 free – 1:47.00
  • 500 free – 4:49.49

Currently a junior at Carroll South High School, Francis finished third in the 100 free and fourth in the 200 free as a sophomore at the Texas 6A State Championships. She has also earned USA Swimming Scholastic All-American honors for her efforts in the pool and in the classroom.

When she arrives in Ann Arbor at the start of the 2022-23 season, Francis will make a big impact both individually and on freestyle relays. She would’ve been Michigan’s third-fastest 100 and 200 freestyler last season, and she would’ve scored in the B-final of both of those events at the 2020 Big Ten Championships where the Wolverines took second overall in the team standings.
