NEW COMMIT: The University of Michigan has scored another verbal commitment for the fall of 2022 from U.S. Open qualifier Malia Amuan of North Andover, Mass.

She will join Devon Kitchel of Zionsville, Ind. as a member of the Wolverines’ Class of 2026.

She told Swimming World:

“I am so beyond thrilled to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of Michigan!〽️ I wanted to thank everyone who has helped and supported me along the way. GO BLUE!!??”

Amuan trains year-round with Phoenix Swimming and raced three events at the Toyota U.S. Open before going on to place 11th in the 200 free and 24th in the 200 IM at Juniors East. At New England Seniors in December, she recorded seven best times and posted five top-6 finishes.

Last summer, she registered six top-6 showings at New England LCM Seniors which included a bronze-medal performance in the 200m free. Amuan then went on to place eighth in the 200m/400m free combo at Geneva Futures and competed on two relays at Junior Nationals.

Her best times include:

  • 50 free – 23.37
  • 100 free – 49.88
  • 200 free – 1:48.32
  • 500 free – 4:53.21
  • 100 back – 56.14
  • 200 back – 1:59.78
  • 100 fly – 56.03
  • 200 IM – 2:01.38

Currently a junior at North Andover High School, Amuan is already a four-time Massachusetts State Champion gold medallist. She won the 100/200 free as a freshman while taking the top spot in the 200/500 during her sophomore season.

In 2019, she set the state record in the 200 free. She has also earned USA Swimming Scholastic All-American honors for her efforts in the pool and in the classroom.

When she arrives in Ann Arbor at the start of the 2022-23 season, Amuan will make a big impact both indiviudally and on freestyle relays. She would’ve been Michigan’s third-fastest 100 freestyler last season and she would’ve scored in the C-final of that event at the 2020 Big Ten Championships where the Wolverines took second overall in the team standings.
