NEW COMMIT: Backstroker Janelle Hummingbird of Rockwall, Texas has made a verbal commitment to the University of Arkansas beginning in the fall of 2019.

Hummingbird swims year-round for Rockwall Aquatic Center of Excellence (RACE) under head coach and former Olympian Neil Walker. She capped off a strong long course season with four best times and five finals appearances at Austin Speedo Sectionals. A Winter Juniors qualifier, she competed at that meet last December and had a pair of lifetime bests at College Station Speedo Sectionals in March.

Hummingbird also competes for Rockwall High School and is team captain. She has qualified for the Texas 6A State Championships each of her three seasons thus far and has earned NISCA and USA Swimming Scholastic All-American honors for her efforts. AT the UIL 6A Region 3 Championships, she won the 100 back and was the 200 IM runner-up during her junior campaign.

She told Swimming World:

“The team is really, friendly, the coaching staff is super supportive and relatable, and the campus is beautiful!  The academic choices are amazing! So glad to have found my home for the next four years… thank you to my coaches, friends and family for helping me through this journey… GO HOGS!!”

Her best times include:

  • 100 back – 56.78
  • 200 back – 2:00.57
  • 100 free – 53.41
  • 200 free – 1:52.82
  • 500 free – 5:01.04
  • 200 IM – 2:06.33

Hummingbird will provide valuable depth for the Razorbacks following the graduation of four top backstrokers. When she arrives in Fayetteville, she’ll join Jessie Beckwith as a member of the class of 2023.
