Italy Selects 42 for European Championships
The Italian Swimming Federation named 42 swimmers to the nation’s roster for the 2016 European Championships beginning next month in London.
The team includes 19 men and 23 women.
The women will be lead by Martina Carraro who broke the Italian record in the 100 breaststroke last week, and Federica Pellegrini who posted an impressive 200 freestyle.
Other team members include Ilaria Bianchi, Diletta Carli, Arianna Castiglioni, Ilaria Cusinato, Martina De Memme, Silvia Di Pietro, Francesca Fangio, Erika Ferraioli, Lisa Fissneider, Sara Franceschi, Elena Gemo, Alice Mizzau, Margherita Panziera, Aglaia Pezzato, Stefania Pirozzi, Alessia Polieri, Simona Quadarella, Ilaria Scarcella, Carlotta Toni, Luisa Trombetti and Carlotta Zofkova.
The men’s roster is highlighted by Simone Sabbioni who broke the 100 backstroke Italian national record and Gabriele Detti who posted the world’s third best 400 freestyle. Federico Turrini swam a third ranked swim of his own in the 400 IM.
They are joined by Jonathan Boffa, Federico Bocchia, Giacomo Carini, Christopher Ciccarese, Piero Codia, Andrea Mitchell D’Arrigo, Luca Dotto, Luca Leonardi, Filippo Magnini, Luca Marin, Filippo Megli, Luca Mencarini, Gregorio Paltrinieri, Luca Pizzini, Matteo Rivolta, and Andrea Toniato.
The meet begins May 9 in London.
