Italian Championships: Pair of Junior National Standards Fall
LIVORNO, Italy, April 5. ON the final day of swimming at the Italian Championships held in Livorno, a pair of junior national records took a tumble.
Pamela Gabrieli, 14, posted a junior record en route to winning the women's 200 breast with a time of 2:28.80, while Silvia Rossi (2:30.35) and Chiara Boggiatto (2:30.73) rounded out the top three.
Luca Leonardi then set the men's 100 free junior national record with a second-place time of 50.11. He finished behind the winning time of 49.63 set by Alessandro Calvi. Michele Santucci placed third in 50.19.
In the 100 backstroke events, Mirco Di Tora touched out Damiano Lestingi, 55.52 to 55.57, to win the men's title, while Enrico Catalano finished third in 55.60. In another close contest, Romina Armellini held off Elena Gemo, 1:01.56 to 1:01.63, to win the women's crown.
Niccolo Beni walked away with the men's 200 fly title in 1:58.71, while Loris Facci snatched the men's 200 breast with a time of 2:12.99.
The women's 200 free had five swimmers finish in the 2:01s. Flavia Zoccari won in 2:01.12, while Alice Carpanese took second in 2:01.36. Wendy Lancellotti (2:01.63), Silvia Florio (2:01.68) and Renata Fabiola Spagnolo (2:01.83) placed third through fifth.
In the men's metric mile, Federico Colbertaldo snared a convincing win with a time of 15:04.98, while Samuel Pizzetti took second in 15:13.30. Cristina Maccagnola followed with a win in the women's 50 fly with a time of 27.01.
