Patrick Hickey, the Head of the European Olympic Committee has been arrested in Rio.
The head of the Olympic Council of Ireland (OCI) is accused of scalping tickets.
According to police, Hickey surrendered his Olympic credential at the time of his arrest, but then tried to escape into an adjoining hotel room.
In a statement the OCI said, “we are seeking total clarity on the situation before we comment further.”
On August 5, Kevin James Mallon, the director of THG sports, a London based company, was arrested in possession of 800 Olympic tickets. There was suspicion that Mallon planned to resell them at high prices.
It is not yet clear if the two arrests are related.
Hickey has held his post with the OCI since 1989 and has been head of the European Olympic Committee since 2006. Additionally, he has served on the International Olympic Committee’s executive board for the past four years.
