Gulliver Prep Girls, Bishop Kenny Boys Claim Florida 2A State Championship Titles

The Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) hosted the 2A State Championships on Saturday, Nov. 6 at the Sailfish Splash Waterpark and Aquatics Center in Stuart, Florida.

After taking second last year, Gulliver Prep captured the girls’ team title with 247 points ahead of Jensen Beach (195) and Cape Coral (190).

On the boys’ side, Bishop Kenny won with 230 points ahead of Arnold (199.5) and Mater Lakes Academy (152). It marked the Crusaders’ second state title in program history and their first since 2004.

Jensen Beach’s Blair Stoneburg successfully defended her state title in the 200 free for the third consecutive year, winning in 1:46.96 to best the field by nearly two full seconds. The Wisconsin commit then dropped a 4:42.04 to win the 500 free yet again by 15 seconds.

The 50 free gold medal was decided by just .01 as the closest race of the entire meet. Lake Wales’ Mary Leigh Hardman sprinted to first in 23.82, just out-touching Madison Lehman of Cape Coral who finished a close second in 23.83. Hardman was the 100 free runner-up in 51.53 behind winner Guiliana Carlini of Estero’s 51.43. Carlini also won the 100 back in 56.58.

Jensen Beach won the 4×50 free relay as well as the 4×100 free relay while Gulliver Prep claimed the 4×50 medley relay. Rylie Darkatsh of Stanton College Prep won the 1-meter board for the second year in a row after posting a final score of 428.75.

Rockledge’s Elliot Weisel led the charge in the 200 free, posting a final time of 1:39.93 as the only swimmer in the field to crack the 1:40-barrier after taking second in 2020. He later defended his title in the 500 free after winning in 4:29.96, three seconds ahead of second place.

One of the closest races of the boy’s meet was the 200 IM in which Stanton College Prep’s Mehdi Elaoufir bested Arnold’s Shane McEliece, 1:53.23 to 1:53.36. McEliece later went on to win the 100 fly, getting his hands to the wall in 49.57 ahead of Charlotte’s Charles Plaisted (49.77).

Clearwater’s Drew Johnson, who was the runner-up in the 50 free a season ago, got his hands to the wall first this year with a winning time of 20.57. The soon-to-be Kentucky Wildcat also collected a gold medal in the 100 free after stopping the clock in a quick 45.89.

Arnold claimed a pair of relays as they won both the 4×50 free relay as well as the 4×50 medley relay. The 4×100 free relay belonged to Mater Lakes Academy. On the boards, Elisha Dees of Edward H. White won the 1-meter with a final score of 513.55
