German Olympic Trials: Steffen Deibler Breaks German Record in Men’s 100 Free
BERLIN, Germany, April 21. THE fourth day of swimming at the German Olympic Trials featured another national record being wiped off the ledger.
Steffen Deibler knocked .33 seconds off the German record in the men's 100 free when he went 48.55 to win the event. Marco di Carli had owned the previous standard with a 48.88 from 2007.
In the women's 200 fly, Nina Schiffer won in 2:09.49, but fell short of the Olympic qualifying standard. The men's 200 breast featured another Olympic-cut miss as Marco Koch won in 2:13.74.
Sabrina Schafer won the women's 1500 free in a time of 16:48.11, while Nadine Pastor took second in 16:59.70. Both well off the German record of 16:00.18 set by Hannah Stockbauer.
In the men's 800 freestyle relay, Joel Ax, Benjamin Bilski, Gero Emeling and Simon Becker won with a time of 7:28.11.
In a non-Olympic event, Thomas Rupprath just missed his former world record time of 24.80 with a time of 24.83. The standard had stood on the global scale since 2003, but Liam Tancock of Great Britain recently broke it with a 24.47 split during a 40-something placing in the 200 back at the British Championships. Silke Lippok won the other non-Olympic event with a 27.08 in the women's 50 fly.
