NEW COMMIT: Junior National qualifier Robert Quan of Ashburn, Va. has announced his commitment to the University of Chicago and will arrive on campus in the fall of 2021.

He will join Tommy Hughson of Hilton Head Island, S.C. as a member of the Maroons’ Class of 2025.

He told Swimming World:

“I am grateful to announce my commitment to study and swim at the University of Chicago. Thank you to my family, coaches, teachers, and friends who made this opportunity possible. Go MAROONS!”

Primarily a mid-distance freestyler, Quan trains year-round with Nation’s Capital Swim Club and most recently earned three best times at the 18&U Winter Championships – Potomac Valley where his highest finish was a seventh-place showing in the 200 free.

He was the runner-up in the 500 free at Potomac Valley Seniors back in March and raced five events at the NCSA Summer Championships in 2019.

His best times include:

  • 50 free – 21.66
  • 100 free – 46.70
  • 200 free – 1:40.72
  • 500 free – 4:34.91
  • 200 IM – 1:54.81

Also competing for Riverside High School, Quan is a six-time individual Virginia State Championship finalist. He placed fifth in the 200 free and seventh in the 500 free as a junior at the 5A meet while taking sixth and fourth, respectively, in those events during his sophomore season at the 4A meet.

He has also earned USA Swimming Scholastic All-American honors for his efforts in the pool and in the classroom.

Quan’s best time in the 200/500 free would’ve landed him in the B-final of both events at the 2020 University Athletic Association Championships where Chicago finished third overall in the team standings.
