NEW COMMIT: The University of Chicago has landed a new verbal commitment for the 2021-22 season and beyond from Junior National qualifier Tommy Hughson of Hilton Head Island, S.C.

He told Swimming World:

“I’m so happy to announce my commitment to the University of Chicago. It is the perfect place for me to grow as a swimmer and a student. Go Maroons!”

Hughson does his club swimming with Hilton Head Aquatics and earned eight best times at Cary Sectionals in March after posting four top-10 finishes at South Carolina Seniors the month prior. He raced two events at Juniors East last December and won the 400m IM at South Carolina LCM Seniors in Summer 2019.

His best times include:

  • 200 IM – 1:54.53
  • 400 IM – 3:59.65
  • 500 free – 4:37.24
  • 200 breast – 2:07.46

Also competing for Hilton Head High School, Hughson is an eight-time individual South Carolina 4A State Championship finalist. He won the 200 IM and 500 free as a senior while taking sixth and second, respectively, in those events during his junior season.

He has also earned USA Swimming Scholastic All-American honors for his efforts.

Hughson’s best time in the 400 IM would’ve landed him in the A-final at the 2020 University Athletic Association Championships where Chicago finished third overall in the team standings. His best time in also just four seconds off their school record as well.
