Freestyler Emily Rygula Announces Verbal Commitment to Vermont Catamounts

NEW COMMIT: The University of Vermont has received a new verbal commitment for the fall of 2021 from Wayne, Ill. native and talented freestyler Emily Rygula.

She will join Bella ChiulliSamantha Kissi, Ellie Russin, Jackie HouseHally Laney, Lauren McCain, Alexis Torykian, and Anna Shoudt in Burlington as members of the Catamounts’ Class of 2025.

Regarding her commitment, she said:

“I am thrilled to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of Vermont!! Thank you to my family, teammates, coaches and friends who have helped me get to where I am today. Go Cats!!???”

Rygula, who trains year-round with Academy Bullets Swim Club, finished 12th in the 200 free at Illinois Seniors in March after earning three best times at the OLY Winter Invite in December. In summer 2019, she finaled in the 100m and 200m free before going on to compete at Minneapolis Sectionals.

Her best times include:

  • 50 free – 24.36
  • 100 free – 53.04
  • 200 free – 1:53.12
  • 500 free – 5:07.91

Also competing for Bartlett High School, Rygula has raced at the Illinois State Championships the last two seasons. At the IHSA St. Charles Sectional meet as a senior, she finished fourth in the 200 free and sixth in the 500 free while taking sixth in the 100 free and seventh in the 200 free during her junior season.

When she arrives on campus next year, she will add her talents to a freestyle training group that will be led by Cailin CampbellMina Poppas, and Sarah Doherty. Under head coach Gerry Cournoyer, Vermont finished third overall in the team standings at the 2020 America East Championships.
