Florida Snags Verbal From Olympic Trials Qualifier Sofia Plaza

NEW COMMIT: The University of Florida has received a new verbal commitment for the 2024-25 season and beyond from Olympic Trials qualifier Sofia Plaza of Charlotte, North Carolina.

She will join Lilly Daley and Emma Weyant as a member of the Gators’ Class of 2028.

Regarding her commitment, she said:

“I am so excited to announce my commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of Florida!! So thankful for the continued support of my friends, family, and coaches. Go gators!!”

Plaza does her club swimming with SwimMAC Carolina and achieved an Olympic Trials cut in the 400m IM at Indianapolis Sectionals back in March with a time of 4:48.33 to finish second overall. There, she also placed third in both the 200m IM and 200m breast.

Back in December, Plaza raced to sixth in the 200 breast at Juniors East and won the B-final of the 400 IM.

Her best times include:

  • 400 IM – 4:13.40
  • 200 breast – 2:12.54
  • 200 IM – 2:00.47
  • 100 breast – 1:02.76
  • 200 back – 2:02.30

Currently a junior at Myers Park High School, Plaza finished fourth in both the 100 breast and 200 IM at the 2023 North Carolina 4A State Championships. She took fifth and third, respectively, in those events during her sophomore season.

She’ll be a great asset to the Gators, as her top time in the 400 IM is already fast enough to score in the B-final at the SEC Championships.
