RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, May 9. IN the last session of swimming finals of the Brazilian Nationals, 18 year-old Thiago Pereira destroyed his own South American record in the 200 IM.
On March 27 at Maldonado at the South American Championships, he swam the second fastest time in the world rankings this year with his time of 2.00.19. Today, he broke the two-minute barrier, clocking 1.59.92. The time ties him for 11th place among the all-time performers in the event and vaults him into medal contention for Athens.
