BERLIN, May 25. NEARLY five years after she set a world record in the 50-meter backstroke, Sandra Volker had an up-close-and-personal view of that global standard being wiped from the books.
On the fifth day of the German Nationals, held Wednesday, Janine Pietsch clocked 28.19 in the one-lap dorsal event to establish a new world record. Volker held the former standard of 28.25 and finished third during Wednesday’s race, going 29.51. Antje Buschschulte was second in 28.50.
At the Athens Olympics last summer, Pietsch failed to advance out of the preliminary round. However, her sprinting prowess has made her the favorite for 50 back gold at this summer’s World Championships in Montreal.
