By Stephen J. Thomas
SYDNEY, June 21. ONE of the USA's most respected coaches Rick Curl – the head coach of the Curl-Burke Swim Club since 1978 – has accepted a three-year contract to become head coach at the Sydney-based Carlile Swim Club.
In a report released late today by Hanson Sports Media, the 54-year-old Curl confirmed that he will take up his new position in October. The report indicated that Curl became aware of the vacancy at the recent Australian Swimming Coaches and Teachers Association Conference in late April, where he had been a speaker.
Curl has presided over four Olympic gold medalists in his time at Curl-Burke; two-time Olympic champion Tom Dolan (1996-2000), current Olympic breaststroke hopeful Ed Moses (2000), Mike Barrowman 200 breaststroke and former world record-holder (1992) and Mark Henderson (1996).
