LONG BEACH, Calif., July 12. AMANDA Beard recaptured her world record for 200 meter breaststroke on the sixth night of competition at the US Olympic Trials in Long Beach.
Beard, 22, clocked 2:22.44, smashing the global standard of 2:22.96 set just three days ago by Australia's Leisel Jones in Brisbane. That swim had broken the previous mark of 2:22.99 that Beard shared with China's Qi Hui.
Beard was under world record pace at the 100-meter mark, though she was only in third place. By 150 meters she was clearly in command, turning half a second under Jones' pace.
Beard's splits:
50m 33.25
100m 1:09.60
150m 1:46.24
200m 2:22.44
