A shocking disqualification for Emily Overholt in the 400 IM at the Pan American Games weighed heavily on her mind as she swam in the prelims of the event at the FINA world championships. Overholt was disqualified for an illegal touch on breaststroke at Pan Ams, and she wanted to make sure that did not happen in Kazan.

“This morning, I was really worried about my turns, so I tried to be a little bit more cautious,” she said. “But tonight, I just tried to go for it, and I wasn’t thinking about it any more.”

Overholt made major gains to earn the bronze medal in the event, breaking the Canadian record by three seconds and putting the DQ well out of her mind. She was one of a few Canadians who was able to post lifetime bests at worlds, three weeks after being at peak form at the Pan American Games.

“I think (wanting to get an official time) helped a lot,” she said. “I really tried to refocus after Pan Ams, … and I’m really happy that I got back down there.”
