Eight Division Records Tumble As Holland Christian Wins Michigan Boys D3 Title

On Saturday afternoon the Holland Christian boys ran away with the 2018 Michigan Division 3 Swimming and Diving State Championships. The team scored 326.5 points to secure their first state title since 1989.

Skyler Cook-Weeks was a leader for Holland Christian. The senior won the 200 freestyle in 1:37.27, setting a new Division 3 record. He was followed by senior teammate Luke Mason in 1:41.06.

Cook-Weeks will head to Queens University beginning next fall. First, he set one more Division 3 record, stopping the clock in 4:25.84 in the 500 freestyle, a second under his own old record. Mason finished third (4:42.77). Marshall’s Mark Lang was runner up in 4:38.52.

In relay action, Holland Christian went three for three. Ian MisKelley, Mason, Riley VanMeter, and Brad Windemuller combined for a 1:33.01 in the 200 medley relay, setting a new Division 3 record. In the 200 freestyle relay MisKelley, Windenmuller, Jacob Heeres, and Cook-Weeks were a second and a half ahead of the field in 1:24.89. In the 400 freestyle relay Holland Christian put an exclamation mark on the meet-blasting two seconds off the Division record with a 3:04.52 (Heeres, VanMeter, Mason, Cook-Weeks).

MisKelley was the other huge individual performer for Holland Christian. The Michigan commit won the 200 IM with a 1:49.58, lowering the Division 3 record, a 1:50.55 swum in 2015. Marshall’s Lang was runner up in 1:51.34. MisKelley returned for another Division record in the 100 backstroke. There, the senior stopped the clock in 49.05.

Another Division record went down in the 50 freestyle. Christian Bart, a senior from East Grand Rapids, stopped the clock in 20.31. Byron Center’s Nolan Briggs finished in 20.57, just shy of the old mark, Bart’s 20.55 set in prelims. Spring Lake’s Cam Peel touched third (20.87). Briggs had another close call with the record books in the 100 butterfly. The senior won the event, finishing in 49.16, a mere .01 away from the 2015 Division record. VanMeter got second (49.39) for Holland Christian.

Bart won the 100 breaststroke in 56.07, just short of his own Division record. After a bronze in the 50, Peel moved up to gold in the 100 free, setting a Division record with his dominant time of 44.97. The previous division mark was a 45.17 set by Matt Hogan in 2009.
