NEW COMMIT: Distance swimmer Maddy Grafmiller of Humble, Texas, has given her verbal pledge to Virginia Tech beginning in the fall of 2021.

She will join Julia Nappi, Ava YandleAlexandra Eastmond and Athena Vanyo in Blacksburg as a member of the Hokies’ class of 2025.

She told Swimming World:

“I am so ecstatic to announce my decision to verbally commit to swim and study at Virginia Tech!! ❤️? I would like to thank everyone who has helped me during this process: my supportive parents, my teammates, my friends, and my coaches! I would also like to say thank you to Coach Jacy and Coach Sergio for making me feel so welcomed and to the college coaches who helped me along the way. I am so excited to begin this new chapter of my life and join the Hokie family! ?”

A Junior National qualifier in the mile, Grafmiller does her club swimming with Blue Tide Aquatics and most recently was the 1500m free runner-up at College Station Sectionals. Last summer, she earned six best times at Southern Zone Seniors where she grabbed silver in the 1500m free and bronze in the 400m/800m free.

  • 1000 free – 10:06.03
  • 1650 free – 16:59.30

Also competing for Atascocita High School, Grafmiller finished eighth in the 500 free as a junior while taking sixth in that event during her sophomore season at the Texas 6A State Championship finalist. She is also a six-time UIL 6A Region 6 Championship finalist and won the 500 free in 2019.

Grafmiller will add valuable distance freestyle depth to the Hokies’ lineup when she arrives on campus at the start of the 2021-22 season and will join a training group led by Loulou Vos and Brooke Travis.
