Davenport University announced today that it is adding men’s swimming and diving to its growing athletic department. The program will compete at the NCAA Division II level and join the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) beginning in the 2020-21 school year.

Current head coach Justin Vasquez of the women’s swimming and diving program will also be in charge of the men’s swimming and diving program.

“As we consider the addition of sports in our department, we reflect on our ability to provide a positive student-athlete experience for prospective members,” said Paul Lowden, executive director of intercollegiate athletics. “We feel that our collaborative relationship with Kentwood Public school aquatics coupled with the opportunity for this program to compete in NCAA DII and the GLIAC created the framework for a natural addition of men’s swimming and diving to our sport offerings at DU.”

The program will train and compete at nearby Kentwood Aquatic Center in Kentwood, Michigan. The team will also join six other GLIAC members including Grand Valley State, Northern Michigan, St. Cloud State, Wayne State, Saginaw Valley State and Ashland.

“I am thrilled that our University has decided to add men’s swimming and diving,” said Vasquez. “The addition of men’s swimming and diving is an example of the support Davenport University has for collegiate student-athlete opportunities.”
