After the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) delayed sports through the fall, the 2021 CIF Southern Section DIII State Championships were held on May 29 at Santa Margarita Catholic High School in Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.

Crespi opened the boys’ meet by winning the 4×50 medley relay in 1:35.66. They also won the 4×50 free relay in 1:24.92, just shy of the Division III meet record of 1:24.73 set by Oaks Christian back in 2008. Palos Verdes won the 4×100 free relay in 3:13.02.

Sonora’s Joey Kling collected a pair of gold medals during the meet, first getting a win in the 200 IM with a time of 1:51.75. The junior then won the 100 back in 49.76 as the only swimmer in the field to crack the 50-second barrier.

Canyon Country’s Ike Harms grabbed gold in the 50 free, stopping the clock in 20.56. He then showed his sprint dominance by also adding hardware in the 100 free, winning the event by well over a second in 45.17.

Oxford Academy freshman Matthew Lee picked up a close win in the 100 fly with a final time of 50.46, as just a half-second separated the top five finishers. Notre Dame Riverside’s Izaiah Lozano was the only swimmer under 1:40 in the 200 free, winning in 1:39.95.

Vista Murietta’s Matthew Vinh dominated the 500 free, securing the victory by over 10 seconds in 4:29.35. Webb’s Kevin Ren got his hands to the wall the quickest in the 100 breast, winning in 56.65, and Glendora’s Charlie Reuter won the 1-meter with a final score of 456.35.

Crean Lutheran clinched a narrow victory in the opening 4×50 medley relay in 1:52.43, just ahead of Chino Hills’ 1:52.49. The 4×50 free relay was also a close one, as Murrieta Mesa won in 1:41.44 to Santa Barbara’s 1:41.52. Murrieta Mesa also won the 4×100 free relay in 3:41.38 to secure the team title.

Kennedy’s Tyryn Empremsilapa took first in the 200 IM, stopping the clock in 2:06.04. Crean Lutheran’s Masen Karsten won the 50 free in 24.04, out-touching Grand Terrace’s Destany Lewis (24.09).

Chadwick’s Jamie Brennan dominated the 200 free, winning by nearly four seconds in 1:48.80. The junior then clinched her second individual title in the 100 free, racing to the wall in 50.68 by almost a full second.

Calabasas’ Josephine Hein flew to first in the 100 fly, getting her hands to the wall in 58.45 to edge out Katherine Holland (58.49) of Culver City. On the boards, Louisville’s Hayden Henderson won the 1-meter with a final score of 552.05.

El Modena freshman Grace Wharton cruised to first in the 500 free in 5:04.28, while Chino Hills’ Elisabella Forest powered home to a win in the 100 back in 55.86. Mayfield’s Taylor Carey got her hands to the wall the fastest in the 100 breast in 1:03.68.
