Cavaliers Add Another For 2025 From Juniors East Bronze Medalist Sophia Umstead
NEW COMMIT: U.S. Open qualifier Sophia Umstead of Jenison, Michigan, has given the University of Virginia another impressive verbal commitment for its growing 2025 recruiting class.
She will join Sylvia Roy and Madi Mintenko in Charlottesville as a member of the Cavaliers’ Class of 2029.
She told Swimming World:
“I am so excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my athletic and academic career at the University of Virginia! I would like to thank my family, coaches, teammates and friends for helping me achieve this dream of mine! I would also like to thank the Virginia coaches for this amazing opportunity! Go HOOS!”
An IMer and breaststroker, Umstead dos her club swimming with Michigan Lakeshore Aquatics and placed second in the 100m breast this past summer at Columbus Sectionals. She earned bronze in the 200 IM at Juniors East last December, also finishing 10th in both the 100 and 200 breast.
Her best times include:
- 100 breast – 1:01.11
- 200 breast – 2:13.31
- 200 IM – 1:57.60
- 400 IM – 4:16.05
- 200 free – 1:49.03
Currently a junior at Jenison High School, Umstead won the 100 breast and 200 IM at the 2022 Michigan Division II State Championships.
The Cavaliers are the two-time defending national champions.
