Carmel Swimmers Claim Three of 10 Top Seeds at Greensboro Juniors; Heilman Lowers NAG Records
The Carmel Swim Team was the dominant group during Friday morning’s prelims at Junior Nationals in Greensboro as three Carmel swimmers, Alex Shackell, Devon Kitchel and Berit Berglund, each recorded the top time in their respective events. Meanwhile, 14-year-old Thomas Heilman took down a pair of National Age Group records in the 13-14 boys’ 100 fly and 200 free.
Shackell, 15, destroyed her best time by almost a second when she finisehd first in the 100 fly prelims in 51.47. That was almost a second-and-a-half ahead of the field, and finishing in the second spot was Lakeside’s Charlotte Crush, who beat her best time by 1.37 seconds on the way to a 53.12. Third went to Kitchel in 53.25.

Kitchel, a future Michigan Wolverine, posted a best time of 1:00.77 to place first in the women’s 100 breast, taking almost a half-second off her best time. Racer X Aquatics’ Zoe Skirboll (1:01.14) and Farmington Valley’s Mackenzie Headley (1:01.26) completed the top three.

The third top seed of the day for Carmel went to Berit Berglund, who topped the women’s 100 back heats in 52.65, just ahead of New Albanay’s Carly Meeting (52.91) and Commonwealth Swimming’s Natalie Mannion (52.97).

In the men’s 100 fly, Heilman led the field by six tenths with his 46.42. He was out in 21.59 and back in 24.83 on the way to breaking Olympian Michael Andrew’s National Age Group record of 46.95. Second place went to Tate Bacon (47.01), just ahead of Mason Manta Rays’ Carl Bloebaum (47.03).

In the men’s 200 free, 16-year-old Daniel Diehl from the YMCA of Cumberland swam a 1:34.56 for the top seed, taking 1.4 seconds off his bet time, while Heilman finished second in 1:35.28 to beat his own best time and 13-14 NAG record by almost a second. Baylor Nelson of SwimMAC Carolina claimed the third seed in 1:36.16.

Earlier in the session, Nelson cruised to the top seed in the 400 IM in 3:48.17. He previously won the 200 IM Thursday night and took first in the 200-meter IM at last week’s U.S. Open. Lakeside Swim Team’s Will Scholtz (3:48.75) and Fishers Area’s Kyle Ponsler (3:49.63) also broke 3:50 in the heats.

Finally, Zionsville’s Will Modglin rounded out the session by swimming a 46.70 for the top seed in the men’s 100 back, just ahead of New Albany’s Hudson Williams in 46.88. Diehl qualified for his second A-final of the day by finishing third (47.13).
