Canadian Trials: Ryan Cochrane Breaks Canadian Record During First Night
MONTREAL, Canada, April 1. RYAN Cochrane knocked more than a second from the Canadian record in the men's 400 free during the first night of the Canadian Trials in Montreal.
Cochrane clocked a time of 3:47.92, which stands in the top 15 in the world this years, to win the 400 free. The performance cleared the 3:49.08 set by Andrew Hurd at the 2006 Commonwealth Games. Hurd, incidentally, finished second for Canada in 3:50.33.
In the men's 400 IM, Keith Beavers won the race with a time of 4:16.98, a top 10 time in the world this year, while Brian Johns placed second in 4:16.98.
For the women, Alexa Komarnycky hit the wall first in the women's 400 IM with a time of 4:42.82, while Tanya Hunks finished second in 4:43.12.
Mathieu Bois surfaced from a tight contest in the men's 100 breast with a time of 1:01.53 to beat Mike Brown (1:01.56), Paul Kornfeld (1:01.59) and Scott Dickens (1:01.68). Kornfeld finished just short after spending a lot of energy in the short course yard department with a sweep of the breaststroke events at the NCAA Division I Men's Championships this weekend.
In the women's 100 fly, Audrey Lacroix joined MacKenzie Downing under a minute with a winning time of 59.47 against Downing's second-place 59.91. Downing still holds the national record with a 58.81 last year.
In Paralympic events, Benoit Huot finished first in the 100 breast event with a 1:17.49, while Brittany Gray completed the women's 100 breast first in 1:30.95. Donnovan Tildesley then touched first in the men's 400 free with a time of 4:53.13.
Results from the Paralympic women's 400 free and the 400 free relay were not available at press time.
