Cam McEvoy Sprints To Quick Start On Final Morning of Australian Championships
The final morning of the 2018 Australian Championships featured all 50’s and 400 IM’s as the meet has one more session to go before it is history. Veterans Cam McEvoy, Cate Campbell, Ben Treffers and Travis Mahoney were the top seeds as they are set up for the final night of the meet in the Gold Coast.
Men’s 200 IM SM8
Only three swimmers competed in the heats of the 200 IM SM8 as Jesse Aungles had a 2:30.30 on Saturday morning in the Gold Coast. Blake Cochrane placed second with a 2:35.36 and visitor James Wong of Malaysia placed third at 2:46.48.

Only seven swimmers competed in the S9 100 back, but veteran Ellie Cole came to play Saturday morning with an 1:11.14. She is ahead of Elizabeth Slack (1:18.16) and Madelein Scott (1:19.22) into the final.

Women’s 50 Back
In the backstroke splash and dash, veterans Emily Seebohm and Holly Barratt came to play as they are the first and third seeds. Seebohm led with a 28.30 while Barratt is third at 28.73. 17-year-old Minna Atherton is the second seed at 28.57.
Hayley Baker (28.78), Sian Whittaker (28.89), Mo O’Callaghan (29.22), Jordana Tonner (29.37) and Zoe Williams (29.41) also qualified in the top eight.
Seebohm has a chance to win her second event of the meet after she won the 100 back earlier in the week.

Men’s 400 IM
27-year-old veteran Travis Mahoney posted the fastest 400 IM of the morning with a 4:23.71. Australia is desperately looking for a premiere 400 IM’er in the country after the suspension of Thomas Fraser-Holmes. Mahoney is just ahead of 200 champion Jared Gilliland (4:23.97) and veteran backstroker Mitch Larkin (4:24.34).
Tomas Elliott (4:24.35), Cal Sherington (4:24.51), Wang Hsin (4:25.22), Se-Bom Lee (4:25.91) and David Schlicht (4:26.41) will also compete in the A-final as they were not separated by much going into Saturday night’s final at the Gold Coast.

26-year-old Ben Treffers has been around the Australian scene for many years. He is still competitive in 2018 as he was third earlier in the week in the 100 back, which could qualify him for another Commonwealth Games team. Treffers is the top seed in the 50 going into Saturday night with a 25.05 to lead the way ahead of Zac Incerti (25.17) and Mitch Larkin (25.27).
Will Stockwell (25.30), Alexander Graham (25.60), Josh Beaver (25.61), Brad Woodward (25.61) qualified for the final. There was a tie for eighth and a swim-off could take place…

Meg Bailey, who made a quick trip to her native Australia from Ohio State, swam the fastest time of the morning with a 4:43.58. Bailey recently won the 400 IM at Big Ten’s for Ohio State. She is just ahead of Mikkayla Sheridan (4:44.18) and veteran Blair Evans (4:45.43).
Keryn McMaster (4:46.17), Tianni Gilmour (4:47.44), Kaylee McKeown (4:47.63), Taylor McKeown (4:48.44) and Barbora Zavadova (4:50.10) also swam in the top eight as Commonwealth Games spots are on the line.

Cam McEvoy has had a rough go at the Commonwealth Games Trials at the Gold Coast as he was eighth in the 200 free and only managed third in the 100. He came back Saturday morning with a 21.87 to be the only swimmer to break 22 seconds in the heats. He is ahead of veterans James Roberts (22.23) and James Magnussen (22.37). The top three swimmers should qualify for the Commonwealth Games.
20-year-old Grayson Bell placed third between Roberts and Magnussen at 22.33.
Jack Cartwright (22.37), Cameron Jones (22.46), Andrew Abood (22.49) and Alexander Graham (22.69) will also compete in the championship final.

25-year-old Cate Campbell has been almost a woman re-born as she has been on fire at the Australian Championships in the Gold Coast. She leads the 50 free heats with a 24.19 ahead of Shayna Jack (24.76) and her sister Bronte Campbell (24.86). They were the only three swimmers under 25 seconds in the heats.
Brittany Elmslie (25.23), Natasha Ramsden (25.37), Holly Barratt (25.41), Kay Broadbridge (25.53) and Jemimah Horwood (25.69) also placed in the top eight in the heats.
