NEW COMMIT: Xavier University has received a new verbal commitment for the fall of 2019 from Broomfield, Colorado butterflyer Sophia Romero. She will join Brooke Atkins as a member of the class of 2023.

Romero swims year-round with the Front Range Barracudas and capped off her summer season with five best times and a runner-up finish in the 100m fly at the Western Zone Senior Championships after taking second in the 200m fly at CO LCM Seniors. She was a four-time finalist at the Colorado Pioneer Open last winter with her highest finish being a fourth-place showing in the 100 fly. Also representing Legacy High School, Romero placed tenth in the 100 fly during her junior season at the Colorado 5A State Championships.

She told Swimming World:

“I am extremely excited to announce my commitment to swim and study at Xavier University. So thankful for the love and support of my family, teammates, coaches, and friends. Go X!”

Her best times include:

  • 100 fly – 57.41
  • 200 fly – 2:05.87
  • 50 free – 24.92
  • 100 free – 54.08

When she suits up for the Musketeers at the start of the 2019-20 season, Romero will join a fly training group led by Taylor Hogan. She would’ve scored in the A-final of the 200 fly and the B-final of the 100 fly at the 2018 Big East Championships.
