Brophy College Prep Boys Win 31st-Consecutive Arizona DI State Championships; Chaparral Takes Girls’ Team Title

The Arizona Division I State Swimming & Diving Championships took place on Saturday, Nov. 3 at the Skyline Aquatic Center in Mesa, Az. The girls’ team title went to Chaparral while Brophy College Prep won the boys’ meet for the 31st straight season.

Girls’ Meet

Xavier College Prep’s Gracie Munk, Paola Guerra, Olivia Paliscak and Kelly Scott opened up the meet with a 4×50 medley relay win in 1:46.18, holding off a charging Mountain View quartet who finished a close second in 1:46.49.

Chaparral’s Ashley Strouse won the 200 free by three seconds in a quick 1:45.44. She also won the 500 free title in 4:48.70 ahead of Xavier’s Mia Rankin (4:51.59). Westwood’s Natalie Crisci won the 100 fly in 55.31 ahead of Chaparral’s Samantha Krew’s 55.91. Perry’s Kalli Fama cruised to first in the 100 free in a swift 50.13.

Mountain View freshman Emma Becker dropped over three seconds from her morning swim to win the 200 IM in 2:02.83. She also got her hands to the wall first in the 100 breast with a time of 1:03.27.

Greer Pattison splashed-and-dashed her way to the 50 free title in 23.16; her teammates Chloe Zapata (23.90) and Sara Segneri (24.08) finished second and third, respectively, to give Chaparral the sweep. Pattison then went on to win the 100 back in 53.74.

Chaparral’s Pattison, Zapata, Krew and Stouse combined to win the 4×50 free relay, finishing four seconds ahead of the field in 1:34.44. Pattison, Krew, Segneri and Pattison concluded the girls meet with a convincing 4×100 free relay victory (3:23.86).

Boys’ Meet

Chaparral’s Braden Walters, Matthew Leblanc, Daniel Simmons and Jonah Ho opened the boys meet with a 4×50 medley State title in 1:34.42. Soon after, Leblanc was back in the water to win the 200 IM in 1:51.54 and he also was victorious in the 100 breast (56.87).

Pinnacle’s Dylan Melin was the only swimmer in the field to crack the 1:40 barrier, winning the 200 free in 1:39.86. Chaparral’s Ellis Bohon dominated the 500 free, winning by ten seconds with a final time of 4:35.33.

Boulder Creek’s Jon Carlo LoVullo won a close 50 free battle, sprinting his way to the win in 20.78 ahead of Brophy College’s Parker Hughes (20.87). Hughes took the top spot in the 100 free (45.07) ahead of LoVullo (45.31).

Desert Ridge’s Essias Smith was the only swimmer under 50 seconds in the 100 fly, just sneaking under the barrier in 49.38. Brophy College’s Matt Milovanovic found himself on top of the podium in the 100 back, getting his hand to the wall first in 50.93.

Brophy College’s Kolbe Bayless, Dane Nelson, Dylan Krueger and Hughes combined to win the 4×50 free relay in 1:24.23. Bayless, Nelson, Milovanovic and Hughes concluded the meet with a gold medal in the 4×100 free relay (3:06.14).
