Big Ten Weekly Honors: Max McHugh, Phoebe Bacon Lead Honorees

The Big Ten Conference announced its weekly honorees for swimming and diving.

Big Ten Men’s Swimmer of the Week

Max McHugh, Minnesota

Jr. – Sturgeon Bay, Wis. – Sevastopol

  • Swept the breaststroke events in the Gophers’ victory against Iowa last weekend
  • Clocked an NCAA ‘A’ cut time in the 100-yard breaststroke (50.55) and now holds the two fastest times in the nation this season (50.55 and 50.63)
  • Posted a NCAA ‘B’ cut time in the 200-yard breaststroke (1:53.17), notching the fifth-fastest time in the nation this year
  • Garners his fifth career Swimmer of the Week award and second of the season
  • Last Minnesota Swimmer of the Week: Max McHugh (Jan. 27, 2021)

 

Big Ten Men’s Diver of the Week

Tazman Abramowicz, Wisconsin

Jr. – Calgary, Alberta – Western Canada Senior High School

  • Swept all three diving events in the Badgers’ win against Northwestern last weekend
  • Finished first on the 1-meter (343.60) and 3-meter (349.05) boards with NCAA qualifying scores
  • Placed first and posted an NCAA qualifying standard on the platform (410.70)
  • Earns his first career Diver of the Week award
  • Last Wisconsin Diver of the Week: Clark Carter (Jan. 13, 2016)

 

Big Ten Men’s Freshman of the Week 
Sawyer Grimes, Minnesota

Las Vegas, Nev. – Nevada Connections Academy

  • Earned three top-three finishes as the Gophers topped Iowa last weekend
  • Finished first in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 9:06.74
  • Finished second in the 200-yard backstroke (1:45.97) and 200-yard individual medley (1:49.71)
  • Earns his first Freshman of the Week award
  • Last Minnesota Freshman of the Week: Gavin Olson (Nov. 13, 2019)

 

Big Ten Women’s Swimmer and Freshman of the Week

Phoebe Bacon, Wisconsin

Fr. – Bethesda, Md. – Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart

  • Collected three first-place finishes against Illinois and Northwestern last weekend
  • Recorded NCAA ‘B’ cut times in the 100-yard backstroke (51.76) and 200-yard backstroke (1:51.63)
  • Touched first in the 200-yard individual medley (1.57.26) to tally another NCAA ‘B’ cut time
  • Garners her second career Swimmer and Freshman of the Week awards
  • Last Wisconsin Swimmer of the Week: Phoebe Bacon (Jan. 27, 2021)
  • Last Wisconsin Freshman of the Week: Phoebe Bacon (Jan. 27, 2021)

Big Ten Women’s Diver of the Week

Sarah Bacon, Minnesota

Sr. – Indianapolis, Ind.– Cardinal Ritter High School

  • Won two diving events during the Gophers’ wins against Nebraska and Iowa last weekend
  • Finished first on the 1-meter board with an NCAA qualifying mark of 352.30, the highest score at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center, passing multi-time All-American and former Big Ten Diver of the Year Maggie Keefer’s score of 351.45
  • Won the 3-meter event with an NCAA qualifying score of 370.20
  • Earns her fourth Diver of the Week award and first of the season
  • Last Minnesota Diver of the Week: Joy Zhu (Jan. 22, 2020)
