Big 12 Championships, Night 1: Arizona State Opens with Pool Sweep; Men Set Record in 200 Medley Relay
Big 12 Championships, Night 1: Post-Texas Era Dawns With Biggest Field
The 57th and 58th Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships will bestowed this week, to the top men’s and women’s team in the conference.
For the first time since 2012, they will go to a team that isn’t Texas.
For the first time since 1998, one could go to a team not from the Lonestar State.
And for the first time ever, a team that is not Texas will win the Big 12 men’s title, the Longhorns under Eddie Reese winning all 28 titles in conference history. The Longhorns women’s were no slouch, winning 22 titles, interrupted four times by current SEC rival Texas A&M. You have to go back to titles by Nebraska in the conference’s first two seasons, in 1997 and 1998, for a non-Texas school.
Instead of focusing on who won’t be at the first neutral-site Big 12 Championships at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, it’s just as notable who is in the rampant reshuffle of college swimming. The Big 12 will feature a meet-record seven men’s teams and 10 women’s, up from five and eight, respectively, a year ago. The new members include the reigning NCAA men’s champion, Arizona State, though much more than just the conference has changed in Tempe since last year’s title.
New blood will shine: Only three athletes have the chance to defend their titles from last year, through the Texas exodus (Texodus?) and the graduation of BYU’s 200 fly champ Brad Prolo. Kansas diver Shiyun Lai, last year’s women’s diving newcomer of the meet, was the only non-Texas female athlete to win a title last year. That leaves plenty of opportunity for Arizona, Arizona State and Utah as they emerge from the ashes of the Pac-12.
The five-day meet kicks off Tuesday night. All the action:
Women’s 200 medley relay
Three A cuts and a silver medal tie have the meet off to a flying start. Arizona State picked up its maiden Big 12 Championships win, going 1:35.63. That’s a season-best, .06 quicker than their seed time. Miriam Sheehan, Iza Adame, Julia Ullmann and Caroline Bentz took the title.
Second was a tie between Cincinnati and Arizona, both in A cuts of 1:36.16. Lexi Duchsherer rallied the Wildcats to get to the wall even with a 21.55 off the end. Joleigh Crye’s 25.75 on breaststroke is one to watch this week.

Men’s 200 medley relay
The first adjustment to the Big 12 record board was provided by Arizona State, the Sun Devils going 1:21.16 to take down the meet and conference records. Lucien Vergnes, Andy Dobrzanski, Ilya Kharun (splitting 19.21) and Jonny Kulow (in 18.19) got the win. They were two tenths quicker than the conference record set in 2022 by Texas and more than a second quicker than the time that quartet set at Big 12s that year (1:22.24).
Arizona finished second in 1:23.79, .17 off the A cut. TCU was third in 1:24.41.

Arizona State took control early and stamped its authority on the race, going 7:04.24 to shave nearly six seconds off its season-best and beat the field by just shy of seven seconds. Erin Milligan (1:44.49), Charli Brown, Grace Lindberg and Alexa Reyna rounded out the quartet.
Arizona was second in 7:11.07 with Houston clawing back to 7:11.96 for third. Only ASU’s is a B cut.

Men’s 800 freestyle relay
Arizona State took home a second meet record, though they needed a back-half surge to do it. The Sun Devils took the lead on the final handoff between Filip Senc-Samardzic to Patrick Sammon to swim past Arizona and get the win in 6:08.54. Tiago Behar and Quin Seider were the front half.
That downs the meet mark set in 2022 by Texas.
Arizona was first most of the way but ended up second in 6:10.62. That’s still an A cut for the Wildcats. Utah was third.
