Big 12 Championships, Day 3 Finals: Ilya Kharun Shines in 100 Fly; Arizona State Women Continue Domination
The Arizona State Sun Devils remain the clear standout team at the Big 12 Championships in Greensboro, N.C., having won every women’s individual event thus far while star junior Ilya Kharun is the clear top performer in the men’s competition.
Kharun added a meet record in the men’s 100 butterfly Thursday while teammate Remi Fabiani also set a championship mark in the 200 free. The night concluded with Kharun and Fabiani comprising the back half of a conference-record-setting team in the 400 medley relay, a group that figures to challenge for a national title next month. Meanwhile, the Sun Devil women picked up individual victories from Julia Ullmann, Alexa Reyna and Albane Cachot, giving their squad a 270-point lead over Arizona.

A tight finish in the men’s 3-meter event Wednesday saw Arizona’s Luke Hernandez beat Utah’s Elias Peterson by just over two points. The rematch on the 1-meter board Thursday was even more competitive, and this time it was Petersen coming out on top by less than a point. Peterson scored 400.10 points to defeat Hernandez (399.15). The Wildcats did go 2-3-4 in the event with Gage Dubois (396.10) and Bo Bridges (386.90) also securing top finishes.

Men’s 100 Butterfly
Ilya Kharun has his second individual win of the competition after a dominant performance in the 100 fly. Kharun, the Olympic bronze medalist in both butterfly events in Paris, blasted a time of 43.77 to lower the Big 12 meet record of 44.06 set by Joseph Schooling in 2017. Kharun was a bit short of his season best of 43.38 from December, but he is in position to challenge for an NCAA title in the event next month. The only other swimmers to crack 44 this season are Florida’s Josh Liendo, Georgia’s Luca Urlando and Tennessee’s Gui Caribe.
Arizona’s Haakon Naughton swam a strong second-place time of 44.69 while Kharun’s ASU teammate Filip Senc-Samardzic placed third in 44.95. ASU’s men picked up more big points in this race as Jordan Tiffany, Tommy Palmer and Tolu Young also raced in the championship heat.

Women’s 400 IM
Arizona State’s Alexa Reyna picked up a victory in the 400 IM after a back-and-forth race with teammate Soni Vaishnani. Both swimmers were coming off strong performances in Wednesday’s session, with Vaishnani taking out the 200 IM while Reyna was second in the 500 free. In this matchup, Vaishnani led after butterfly and again after breaststroke, with a 1:10.42 split on that leg, but Reyna dominated the long-axis strokes to pick up the win by more than a second.
Reyna recorded a time of 4:09.22, well under the NCAA qualifying time of 4:13.20. Vaishnani was second in 4:10.52, having already secured her ticket to Atlanta. BYU’s Lucy Warnick ended up third in 4:15.78.

Men’s 400 IM
Brigham Young University has its first victory of the competition thanks to the efforts of Tanner Nelson, who took down Arizona State’s Reece Grady by less than a tenth. Grady took over the lead after the backstroke leg and narrowly held off Nelson on the breaststroke, but Nelson responded with a 51.22 freestyle leg to come over the top of Grady and take the win.
Nelson finished in 3:44.46 to qualify for NCAAs, with Grady second in 3:44.55. Utah’s Strahinja Maslo picked up third in place in 3:45.89.

Women’s 200 Freestyle
Day three of the Big 12 meet will conclude with ASU still undefeated in women’s individual swimming events. Albane Cachot, the native of France who arrived in Tempe at midseason, took her second triumph of the meet in the 200 free. Cachot built a lead of more than a second at the halfway point and gave back only a little ground down the stretch on the way to a time of 1:44.58. Having now won the 50 and 200-yard races, Cachot will be the big favorite for a third win in the 100 free.
Arizona’s Kayman Neal was the best swimmer on the back half of the event, and that allowed her to come home for second place in 1:45.33, two hundredths ahead of Grace Lindberg of the rival Sun Devils (1:45.35). That finish cost ASU one point, but the team still came up big here with Cachot, Lindberg, Gerde Szilagyi (fourth), Ella Guilfoil (fifth) and Jordan Greber (seventh) in the top heat.

Women’s 400 Medley Relay
The Arizona State women capped off a wildly successful evening with a victory in the 400 medley relay. Arizona actually led for much of the race, with the margin nearing a second at the halfway point, but Julia Ullmann, the 100 fly winner for the Sun Devils, split 51.71 on that leg to cut into the margin significantly. That set up Albane Cachot, the ASU freshman who has been the meet’s top performer on the women’s side. Cachot came home in 46.96 to take the lead and secure the win.
Arizona State, which also had Miriam Sheehan and Ginger McMahon on the squad before giving way to Ullmann and Cachot, finished in 3:30.68 for an NCAA automatic qualifying time. Arizona’s Lila Lillie, Eleni Gewalt, Maryam Sheikhalizadeh and Julia Wozniak placed second in 3:30.96, an NCAA provisional time, while Cincinnati’s Ellie Schrank, Joleigh Crye, Kate Mardis and Taira Vroom placed third in 3:34.21.
Crye, fourth in the 100 breaststroke at last season’s NCAA Championships, split 57.86 on her signature stroke, setting up a strong performance to come in the individual 100 breast Friday.

Men’s 400 Medley Relay
Arizona State’s men capped off the evening with a conference record in the 400 medley relay, sending a message that they are poised to contend at the NCAA Championships. The team led from start to finish, with the fastest 100-yard splits on every stroke on the way to besting second-place Arizona by more than five seconds.
Adam Chaney led off in 43.93, becoming just the fourth swimmer to swim sub-44 in the 100 back this season. Andy Dobrzanski followed with a 50.36 breaststroke split before Ilya Kharun swam the fastest butterfly split of his life at 42.81. All that was left was for Remi Fabiani to come home in 40.38 and secure the win. The Sun Devils’ final time was 2:57.48, crushing the conference record of 2:58.97 and meet record of 3:00.55, both of which ASU posted last season. The time was the second-best in the country thus far this season, only two hundredths behind the time from Texas at the SEC Championships last week.
Arizona finished second here in 3:02.84 with a team of Duncan Henderson, Tavner Wisdom, Haakon Naughton and Tomas Lukminas. The splits were solid, particularly Naughton at 44.16 on butterfly and Lukminas anchoring in 41.46, and the Wildcats will be set up to score points in this event at the NCAA level. Texas Christian placed third in 3:07.97 with a team of Edgar Cianci, Nikola Koltin, Lior Mizrahi and Peter Horton.
